Why Online Mixing And Mastering Is Better Than The Local Studio | Print |  E-mail

We get an email at least once a week from a potential client stating that they've decided to go to a local recording studio and are going to pay 3-4 times what we charge.   When asked why, they say it's better for them to be at the studio while the song is being mastered, then they can give their input and adjustment requests right on the spot.

Major record labels spend $200,000-$300,00 to record, mix and master their top cd projects.  This cd must be approved by the top guys in the company before it is released.  If it's so important to be in on the mixing and mastering sessions, why isn't Clive Davis (major label top executive) ever sitting in on any of these sessions?

Because first off, every studio has different speakers.  You can play the same song on five different speaker setups and every one will sound entirely different.  It would be a waste of time for him to give any input on unknown speakers.  If a system is set-up with heavy bass and he requests to cut the bass in half, it's a bad adjustment.  When he gets home and listens on a familiar system, the bass will be gone!

And second, the final result is all that anyone cares about.  Clive Davis gets a finished CD, then he listens to it on a speaker system "he knows."  A speaker system he has listen to 1,000's of songs on.  This is his "real world" environment.  On his own system, he can immediately tell if he likes the bass, the width, depth, clarity, etc.  He can then listen in his car and get a good feel for the cd.  Now, after listening a few days, he'll tell the producer what he wants changed.  It may be mastering adjustments or it could go all the way back to mixing.  Sometimes entire music parts have to be replayed or vocals re-sung.  Whatever the changes may be, they are decided by listening to a finished product on familiar speaker systems.

This is how you have to approach your cd project, and working with our online company makes it even easier.  We professionally mix or master your songs, you download them, then you can take a few days and review them on your "real world" familiar speaker systems.  Then shoot us an email with preference adjustments for each song.  We'll make the changes and upload them for your review.  If you're still not happy with our work, you can request a full refund at this point, no questions asked.  If you approve our work, we'll upload your finished masters.  If you would like another set of adjustments we charge $3 per adjustment set, per song.  Note: Many times our mastering work is approved on the first demo, no adjustments required.

I've heard so many stories about artists going back and forth to recording studios, making constant changes and adjustments to their mixing and mastering, but it just never sounds right.  They end up spending THOUSANDS of dollars on the finished product, when we could have gotten it RIGHT for HUNDREDS of dollars.  Regardless of the price, you need your music to sound good.  We can help you achieve this, and it's an added bonus that you'll save 60% or more working with us!

One more thing I would like to mention, there's a slight misconception that a professionally mixing or mastering song will come out 100% exactly how you like it.  Sometimes this is true, but many times there are slight preference changes that only the client knows.  Some people love bass and want it cranked up, while others want the bass down and the mids real sharp and clear.  Either style is correct, but it's a matter of preference only the client knows.  Once we know the clients exact preferences, we can apply these adjustments and all of your songs will sound amazing
