What File Type Should I Submit For Audio Or CD Mastering? | Print |  E-mail

To get the best results from mastering, it helps to have a good mix to begin with.

In this article we'll discuss what file formats, bpm, etc. you should submit for mastering.  Then we'll point you to another article that will greatly improve your mixes.

1. File Format
The best files to submit are .Wav files either 41.1hz or 48 hz, with a bit rate of 16 or 24.  CD's are bounced down to 41.1hz, so I've never felt a need to master in a higher sample rate.

In this day and age, most songs are listened to as MP3's ( a lower sound quality file ).  We would rather mix .Wav files, but it's not crazy to work with MP3 files if that's all you have, since most indie songs will be listened to as MP3's anyway.

2. BPM
Each week we get in .Wav files that have a BPM (beats per minute) code embedded in them.  Usually it comes from the program sound forge, reason or fruity loops.  You should always save your .Wav files WITHOUT the BPM code.  If you must save with this BPM code, make it 120.
