| Music Lawyer, Entertainment Attorney Online - When Will You Need One? | | Print | |
|
When is it time for an entertainment attorney or an online music lawyer? This is up to the individual. Copyrighting your songs, trademarking your band name, getting your irsc codes, publishing your songs, these are all legal matters that you can easily do yourself. An entertainment attorney would charge you thousands of dollars. We'll give you the basic details on how to do all of these on our website (in upcoming articles). If you're running your own record label and need a contract to sign an act, there are music attorneys online that have form contracts. Some will edit them for a small fee. You'll be looking at a few hundred dollars for one. It beats having to pay $5,000 to an entertainment lawyer to draw up a custom contract for you. Note: He's probably selling you a form contract anyway! The time to hire an entertainment attorney is when you're being offered a contract from a record label. Music lawyers (with experience) are schooled in what to look for in these contracts that's not in your favor. Make sure the attorney you hire doesn't have a relationship with the record label you're dealing with, or his advice to you will be biased towards the label. Also, be sure you agree to a reasonable flat fee for the attorney. NOT a percentage! He (or she) is not your manager. You just want them to interpret your contract and to explain all details and any problems that may arise in the future. The top attorneys reside in New York ( NY ), and Los Angeles ( LA ), but every state has music lawyers schooled in contract negotiation. Related Articles None |
