In The Mastering Process, Can You Make "Only" My Vocals Louder Or Quieter? | Print |  E-mail

The answer is yes, but sometimes no.  It depends.

Gain, EQ and or clarity techniques can be used to make the vocals more understandable.  In some cases this is what the client is looking for, not exactly making the vocals louder.

If we try and gained or cut the vocal frequency range, it will work very well if there are no other instruments in the same frequency range.  If there are, that instrument will get louder or quieter along with the vocals.

Regardless of the frequency instrumentation issues, we can usually make a vocal track 2-4 db louder or quieter using a combination of all of our techniques.

The easiest fix is for the client to wait for mastering to be finsihed, then just adjust the vocal track accordingly and upload a new mix.  Then we can apply the mastering settings to the new mix and we're finished.  That is of course if you have the capabilty of doing this.

Note: Vocal levels are automaticallty adjusted as part of our mastering process.
