Just this past week, when Jive recording artist/Grammy nominee, Bowling For Soup, needed their acoustic CD professionally, economically and quickly mastered for an upcoming U.K. tour, they turned to Big Label Sound Studio to do the job! 

Some of the songs they submitted were between 70%-80% mastered and didn't need much done to them, while a few were completely unmastered.  Our job was to get every song sounding the best it could, and to maintain a consistent volume level for all 16 songs.

DJ Nita submitted dozens of funky club house songs from various artists he was working with.  The songs have a nice beat to them; and a thick sound with good power.

With this particular project, since the mixes were very good, all we needed to do was “enhance” what was already there, not drastically change anything.  Just make everything a little thicker, a little clearer, added balance and leveled it so it can be blasted loud in clubs all over the world.  The final result was dozens of great sounding masters!

DJ Any is a global trance and progressive DJ/producer who has done extensive work all throughout Europe.  When he needed mastering on his latest music creation, he called upon Big Label Sound Studio to get his music where it needed to be.

The songs were good, but the mixes came in slightly muffled and weak in the mid/high area.  In this genre of music, most important is a driving bass, but we still need to hear all of the synth melodies and synth fillers.  After our mastering, everything has more power and balance.

Iris Distribution is a music distribution and marketing firm based in San Francisco, CA and New York City.  We began a business relationship with them over a year ago and have since worked on several of their projects, one of them being Marbeya.

We do quite a bit of music in this genre.  Marbeya’s music is a good example of great arranging.  It’s a work of art, with changing melodies and a variety of different instrumentation throughout the entire song.  At certain points of the song, three different melodies are playing at the same time and they blend together perfectly.  Not to mention the great use of the stereo field, with subtle synth parts coming in and echoing left and right.

Our mastering brought these songs to life!  Listen using headphones and notice that we didn’t add anything drastic, other than add more punch to the bass, but what we did do was make the elements in the song sound better.  Our phase correction made everything clearer with some sparkle.  You can now “hear” the echoes and FX better.

Songwriter/producer Mihai Ristea contacted us to master his latest project featuring Romanian singer Andra.  She is currently performing all over Europe, appearing on several TV shows promoting her new hit single, “Telephone,” a song we mastered in July 2011.

The mixes on this project were very good.  Clean with good frequency balance and spacing.  We just did our thing and the masters came out great!

When mastering, sometimes we will use a “top radio hit” song as a reference to hear the current trends in radio ready music.  With this project, the mastering came out “better” than most of the radio reference tracks we use!  There was no need to reference anything.  Which proves once again, just because a major label pays $40,000 to have a song recorded, mixed and mastered, doesn’t mean it will sound great.  It depends on who does the work.  All it means is they paid $40,000 for one song!

Mihai and Andra, I wish you great success with this and future projects!  Great job!

Every month we work on 3-6 Christian projects.  Gospel, Choir, Christian hard rock, Pop, you name it. 

The songs on this CD are a combination of a few styles.  They have a powerful pop sound, combined with a little gospel choir going on.  When mastering these songs, we took this into consideration, and expanded on each element.  The original mixes weren't great, but we made sure they had a good bass punch and thickness, the mids were clear, the top end had some sparkle, and we added some width to enhance the gospel choir vocals.   Finally, we compressed just the right amount so you can jam these songs without them breaking up.  The mixes came in weak and

You can have all the music equipment in the world, but knowing “what a song needs” in mastering is the first step in creating a good master.

Ryan Saranich is one of the top up-and-coming Jazz saxophonist/musicians in the United States.  He is currently attending the prestigious Berklee College Of Music on scholarship, and has performed at over 150 venues the last two years, which includes appearances in L.A., N.Y., Boston, North Carolina, Louisiana, Thailand, Denmark, Canada, and Germany, just to name a few.

The original songs are live recordings (not studio recordings).  I’m not going to explain in great detail what we did in the mastering process, just listen closely to the before and after samples.  Let’s just say the songs went from thin in the low end and flat, with a slight muffle; to a thick, clean, dynamic, sparkling sound.  The songs now have life!   If you ever asked the question, “What is good mastering,” listen to these before and after samples with headphones.  There’s your answer!  The songs aren’t just “louder,” they “sound better.”

After years of telling funny stories about their life experiences, Fleenor & Reap were urged by family and friends to make them into a CD.  A year later, “Cranky Old Men” was born.  Whether you’re a Country fan or not, these songs are just flat out funny (and true).  It shows what you can do when you combine great creativity, talent and hard work.

The main problem we had with the mixes was an inconsistency in the vocal volume levels (a common problem we see).  Correcting this was essential because these songs are basically jokes/stories.  If you can’t understand the last three words of the sentence, you’re not going to get the joke.  We pointed this out and they corrected the problems.  Overall, the project came out good.
